THERE IS BEAUTY IN THE CITY: jen cantwell

I live in Inverness, I took these today when I was walking along the Caledonian canal, it was very very icy, all the spiderwebs were frozen. The Caledonian canal cuts through Inverness and i took these right at the end of it where it meets the Beauly Firth.

It is a very simple idea. On the walk, I have my camera and my magnet. The magnet says,

There is Beauty in the City

and that is precisely what I am looking for. I know it when I see it. Hopefully, there is a metal surface nearby so I can attach my magnet, but if not, I improvise. As long as there is something to be noticed, I can make my intervention - placing the magnet. Once in place, I take a photograph, and leave the magnet for others to notice the beauty.

The project originates from Stoke-on-Trent, a city in the north of England, by artist Anna Francis as a way of reframing and re-negotiating our cities. It is designed as a collaborative project, open to everyone.

To get your magnet, send your name and address to

thereisbeautyinthecity@yahoo.co.uk

and a pack will be sent to you. Then go out into the city, identify your scene of beauty and make your intervention. Photograph the magnet in situ and send the image with some explanatory text to

thereisbeautyinthecity@yahoo.co.uk.

It will then be added to the project blog for all to share. Remember to leave your magnet in its place for others to notice your intervention.
